History:

In 2001, Mohammed VI inaugurated an extraordinary festival that has since conquered the world of cinema. Marrakesh was the natural choice to host this iconic event, thanks to its world-class infrastructure. Under the direction of French producer Daniel Toscan du Plantier, the Marrakesh Festival has become much more than a simple celebration of the 7th art. It has become an internationally renowned platform, uniting film talent and cultures from around the world.

At the heart of this initiative is the overriding objective of highlighting cinematographic works of exceptional quality, thereby contributing to the artistic evolution of world cinema. At the same time, the committee is committed to stimulating the film industry in Morocco, offering new opportunities, and encouraging growth.

Finally, the Marrakesh Festival is an ambassador for Morocco, spreading the country's cultural wealth around the world.

Join us in this extraordinary cinematic and cultural adventure, where talent and diversity meet to create unforgettable moments.

New Edition 2023:

A range of international personalities will join the festival conversations: William Dafoe, Simon Baker, Bertrand Bonello, Anurag Kashyap, Naomi Kawase, Tilda Swinton & Andreï Zvyagintsev.

But two artists will be specifically honoured in this 2023 edition of the Marrakech Film Festival.

Mads Mikkelsen, from Denmark, is an actor who transcends borders, successfully juggling Hollywood blockbusters and European arthouse cinema. His audacity and magnetism have taken him to the top, and his ability to reinvent himself with each new role makes him irresistible. He is undoubtedly one of the most captivating and admired figures of his generation, and his name resonates around the world.

On the other side of the camera, Faouzi Bensaïdi, from Morocco, has charted an exceptional course, becoming a pillar of Moroccan cinema on an international scale. His films, imbued with poetry and subtle humour, are regularly celebrated at the world's leading festivals, offering a unique cinematic experience.

When Mads Mikkelsen heard the news, he expressed his immense honour and joy at returning to Marrakesh, a city of a thousand stories, to receive this tribute. Faouzi Bensaïdi, for his part, shared his pride at being honoured by the Marrakesh Festival, a luminous and innovative event that continues to reinvent itself.

Since its creation in 2001, the Marrakesh International Film Festival has been committed to celebrating world and Moroccan cinema in the most memorable way, honouring legends and contributing to the development of the cinematic art.
